"Then Jesus explained his meaning: "I tell you the truth, corrupt tax collectors and prostitutes will get into the Kingdom of God before you do. For John the Baptist came and showed you the right way to live, but you didn't believe him, while tax collectors and prostitutes did. And even when you saw this happening, you refused to believe him and repent of our sins." Matthew 21:31-32 (NLT)

The religious leaders questioned Jesus' authority to teach and perform miracles. They were trying to trap him – even at the expense of other people.

That's where the woman caught in the act of adultery found herself. The Pharisees brought her to Jesus, saying the law says to stone her. "What do you say?" they asked, demanding an answer.

"Jesus stood up again and said, 'All right, but let the one who has never sinned throw the first stone!'" (John 8:7)
